Keep Families Together

This month, I introduced the Keep Families Together bill package in the Wisconsin Assembly. These bills are straightforward: ban identity-based detention in our state, stop local resources from being funneled into ICE’s hands, and make sure Wisconsin never becomes the next Florida.

Why? Over the past eight months, my constituents have stopped me at events, contacted my office, and shared personal stories of the growing fear and horror that comes with watching the Trump regime abduct, detain, and deport people they perceive to be immigrants without due process, without accountability, often without even showing their faces. In some cases, constituents are working personally with loved ones who have been dealt deportation orders after living in Western Wisconsin for essentially their entire lives.

This is authoritarianism, plain and simple. I refuse to let Wisconsin stand by while families are torn apart. Our communities are stronger, safer, and more humane when we invest in people — not cages.

Republicans are already lining up to block this package. My colleague from Menomonie was quick to portray the bill as “dangerous.” I personally think it’s dangerous when government resources are used to cage people instead of helping communities thrive.

I’ll keep fighting every single day to protect immigrant families and stand up for our shared values. That’s my promise.
