American Federation of Teachers (AFT) – Wisconsin Endorses Christian Phelps for Wisconsin’s 93rd Assembly District

On Thursday, June 13, the American Federation of Teachers-Wisconsin (AFT-Wisconsin) endorsed Christian Phelps for the 93rd Assembly District, covering the western half of the city of Eau Claire and parts of Dunn, Eau Claire, and Trempealeau Counties.

“Whether he is in the capitol testifying or meeting with concerned community members in a public library, Christian is a strong voice for the schools Wisconsin students need and will be a strong legislator,” said Kim Kohlhaas, President of AFT-Wisconsin.

The union represents thousands of public sector laborers in Wisconsin, at both the preK-12 level and higher education professionals, including faculty and staff at UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stout, Chippewa Valley Technical College, school clerical employees in Eau Claire, and more.

“This campaign is all about bringing power back to the public,” said Christian Phelps. “Coming from a family of Wisconsin public school educators and a background in public education, it is my honor to work with educators at AFT-Wisconsin and to fight to restore labor rights throughout the public sector.”

“This endorsement comes at a precarious time for our higher education system, as we celebrate the new science building at UW-Eau Claire right here in the 93rd but have also just learned about the closure of the two-year UW-Oshkosh Fox Cities campus,” Phelps continued. “By working with this fantastic labor union, we can fully reinvest in our public education system from cradle to college and beyond.”

This endorsement makes Phelps the first union-endorsed candidate in the race for the 93rd Assembly District. Phelps spent two years as a paraprofessional in Wisconsin public schools and has worked for four years as communications director for Wisconsin Public Education Network, a nonprofit organization that advocates for public schools.
